AIDS

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus. There is no cure or vaccine found for this disease yet.It is spread through sharing of needles for drugs injection, sexual contact with infected person and to fetus / baby via the placenta / blood of his infected mother.

The number of HIV cases in the District of Melaka Tengah are increasing every year. Most of them are in the age group of 20 to 39 years old. Most of them are intravenous drugs mainliners.

The increased number of cases is because of the increased number of cases detected in the state. Most cases are detected at the SERENTI Centre in Tiang Dua, Banda Hilir Jail and Sekolah Henry Gurney Telok Mas. A few cases are detected from the Boys Hostel in Bukit Baru, Dusun Dato Murad in Ayer Keroh and the women in rehabilitation centre of Tunas Bakti in Lereh.

All the HIV positive cases were counselled regarding behaviour modification to prevent further spread of the disease. Self hygiene was also taught to delay the emergence of AIDS symptoms.

HIV screening (testing) for antenatal mothers was initiated nationwide early 1997. This was done in view of the findings from an anonymous study showing that 1 in every 500 mothers tested was found to be HIV positive.

AIDS is a threat to us. Together we work towards an AIDS free society.
